East Devon District Council is carrying out essential tree works at Manor Gardens in Exmouth, following confirmation that a large Turkey Oak tree in the grounds has died and now poses a safety risk.
The removal work will begin on Monday 8 December and is expected to be completed within two days. The tree, which is approximately three metres in diameter, overhangs the outdoor seating area at the Bumble & Bee café, making timely action necessary to protect visitors and staff.
Carrying out the work in winter helps minimise disruption, as the gardens are quieter at this time of year.
The immediate work area will be securely taped off, with clear signage in place asking visitors to avoid the section of the gardens where the team is operating. Manor Gardens will remain open throughout, and access routes will be maintained.
EDDC is exploring options to plant a replacement tree in the future, where the site and conditions allow.
Cllr Geoff Jung, EDDC Portfolio Holder for Environment – Operations, said: “We understand how important the trees in Manor Gardens are to residents and visitors, but the safety of the public must come first. We will continue to manage the gardens responsibly and sensitively, and we always plant suitable replacement trees wherever possible.”
