The Exmouth community has come together in a remarkable show of support after residents were evacuated yesterday following the discovery of a Second World War unexploded bomb near Exmouth Marina.
The device was found during dredging works at the marina, prompting police to establish a 400-metre safety cordon as a precaution. Residents within the area were asked to temporarily leave their homes, with police advising people not to return unless essential, such as to collect vital medication or care for animals.
Despite the disruption, local businesses, volunteers, and community groups quickly stepped in to help those affected. Cafés, shops, and nearby venues opened their doors, offering warmth, refreshments, and reassurance to displaced residents, while neighbours checked in on one another to ensure everyone had what they needed.
Military bomb disposal experts are now on site and have begun carefully assessing the device to determine the safest method of disposal. To allow this work to proceed safely, the security cordon around the marina has been extended. Members of the public are asked to continue following instructions from emergency services and to avoid the marina area until further notice.
Councillor Paul Arnott, Leader of East Devon District Council, praised the calm and cooperation shown by residents. He said:
“Our teams are working closely with military specialists to ensure the device is made safe as quickly as possible, and we will provide updates as soon as we have them. We understand this is an unsettling situation for local residents, and we thank everyone for their patience and cooperation.”
While the situation remains ongoing, the response has highlighted the strength and resilience of the Exmouth community, with residents and businesses alike pulling together to support one another during an unexpected challenge.
