Exmouth Lifeboat assists sailor whose sailing dinghy had capsized off Shelley beach.

Yesterday, (Sunday 6 April) the volunteer crew of Exmouth RNLI were tasked by H.M. Coastguard to assist a sailor whose sailing dinghy had capsized off Shelley beach.

Exmouth RNLI’s inshore D-class lifeboat, George Bearman II, launched at 13.20 with 3 crew aboard, following a call from the sailor who was well-equipped and carrying VHF radio.

Due to the warm and sunny weather conditions, the area was busy with other sailors on the water, including off-duty Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew member, James Edge. Despite assistance provided by fellow sailors, James was able to confirm to the Coastguard that the assistance of the Exmouth lifeboat was required.

Arriving on scene, the Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew safely recovered the casualty and his dinghy, returning them to the harbour. The sailor was cold, but wearing good kit, and was delivered to shore unharmed.

Exmouth RNLI’s volunteer crew returned to the lifeboat station where the George Bearman II was washed down and refuelled, ready for the next shout.
