Exmouth Town Council is pleased to announce the reopening of the public toilets at the Maer in Exmouth, following a successful collaboration with East Devon District Council (EDDC).
The facilities, which had been closed as part of EDDC’s Public Toilet Review, will now be operational throughout the summer holidays. This has been made possible thanks to Exmouth Town Council’s offer to cover the operating costs for an initial period of three months.
Councillor Frederick Caygill, Chair of the Town Council’s Premises and Assets Working Party, said:
“On behalf of Exmouth Town Council, I am pleased to report that after initiating discussions with East Devon District Council, we are able to fund, for a period of three months initially, the opening and ongoing servicing of the Maer toilets. This is the right course of action for the ongoing summer season and will provide a much-needed facility on the Maer, adjacent to the barbecue area, which has recently been refurbished due to the kind generosity of Exmouth Rotary Club.”
Cllr Geoff Jung, East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment– Operational, said:
“The toilets at The Maer were among the facilities East Devon District Council could no longer keep open following the Public Toilets Review. I’m therefore very pleased that the Town Council has stepped in to fund a temporary reopening over the summer. We’ve explored a number of options in recent years to secure public toilets for this site, and this is the first time a workable solution, albeit temporary, has been found. We’d be very happy to continue conversations with the Town Council or other partners about a long-term arrangement to keep these facilities available to the public.”
EDDC and Exmouth Town Council will continue to explore longer-term solutions for the future of the site beyond the summer period.
