Inspector Mat Helm has introduced himself as the new neighbourhoods inspector for Exmouth, Ottery St Mary, and surrounding areas including Budleigh Salterton, Cranbrook, and West Clyst. With nearly 20 years of experience in the region, including time as a former beat manager for Exmouth and a member of the Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Helm brings extensive local knowledge to the role.
Having spent the last three years as a patrol inspector in South Devon, he is familiar with the unique challenges facing the Exmouth and Ottery St Mary areas. Helm oversees a dedicated team of neighbourhood PCs who focus on tackling a range of issues such as drugs, antisocial behaviour, dangerous offenders, and modern-day slavery.
Although the community may not always see them, Helm assures residents that his team is working tirelessly to ensure safety. The neighbourhood team is also supported by two PCSOs, one at each station.
Helm also shared a glimpse into his personal life, revealing his passion for mountain biking, dinghy racing, and outdoor activities. A new neighbourhood sergeant will also join the team soon, further strengthening local policing efforts.
“I’m here to ensure that your communities remain safe and that we address the concerns that matter most,” Helm said.
