The East Devon District Council Countryside Team has launched a new volunteering group in response to growing community interest in hands-on conservation work and the recent addition of Clyst Meadows Country Park.
The ‘Working Wednesday Group’ will play a crucial role in habitat restoration and ecological enhancement, supporting the Countryside Rangers as they enhance and protect the district’s natural landscapes.
Under the leadership of Ranger Ben Morgan-Brown, the group will initially focus on Clyst Meadows Country Park— a Local Nature Reserve that is set to enhance the local ecosystem with hedgerows and mature trees, helping to protect and enrich the natural environment.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage in a range of meaningful conservation activities, including habitat creation, infrastructure creation and maintenance, tree planting and hedgerow laying; with the initial focus being on the production of sustainable charcoal.
As the group becomes more established activities will expand across the district on other old and new sites, including the expansion of the award-wining Seaton Wetlands.
Cllr Geoff Jung said:
“Volunteers have an incredible impact on the East Devon landscape. The expansion of our volunteering efforts will enable our Countryside team to achieve even more for local biodiversity, habitat creation and public engagement. Our Countryside team is small but incredibly ambitious, managing 12 sites with more on the horizon. This new group will allow us to make an even bigger impact.”
Ben Morgan-Brown said:
“Volunteers play a vital role in maintaining and developing East Devon’s green spaces. The Working Wednesday Group, offers a fantastic opportunity for people to get hands-on with conservation, learn new skills, and make a real difference in the local environment. We welcome enquiries from anyone interested in contributing to healthy and diverse green spaces through practical outdoor work.”
