Seachange Launches "Story Makers" Campaign to Combat Loneliness
A recent survey revealed that 58% of people in the Woodbury, Exmouth, and Budleigh area of East Devon experience loneliness, isolation, or both. In response, Seachange, a local charity dedicated to improving health and reducing loneliness, hosted an event on Thursday, November 28th to unveil their new regular donor campaign, "Story Makers."
The campaign celebrates the transformative impact of Seachange’s work, featuring heartfelt stories from community members like Kathy, Martyn, Andy, and Paula, who have benefitted from the charity’s support.
“Regular donations are the lifeblood of our charity,” said Marc Jobson, Head of Seachange. They provide the stability and predictability we need to plan long-term initiatives and respond to urgent needs. When individuals choose to support us consistently, they're not just giving money; they're investing in a better future for our community.”
Kathy’s Journey from Isolation to Connection
Kathy, a local resident, shared how Seachange transformed her life after the loss of her husband of 61 years left her feeling isolated and abandoned. Limited by her mobility, Kathy initially struggled to meet people or leave her home. "When you first come, you're worried about remembering people," Kathy said. "But then you realise it doesn't matter. You get to know the people sitting on either side of you. Then, you slowly get to know everyone else. It’s lovely."
Kathy now attends Seachange events regularly, including the Thursday Club, monthly Film Club, day trips, and the newly introduced Book Club. Volunteer drivers pick her up in the community bus, turning even the ride into a social highlight.
“When I first started coming here, it changed my life,” Kathy added. “I can't imagine my life without Seachange. I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
Join the Fight Against Loneliness
Seachange’s Story Makers campaign aims to grow its base of regular donors to meet increasing community needs. A regular donation of just £12 a month helps provide essential services like the ones that have brought hope to Kathy and others.
