On Wednesday 10 December, the NHS released the results of the 2025 CQC Maternity Survey. The Royal Devon performed well against the national average, and better than most Trusts in 14 of the survey questions.
Introduced in 2007, this national survey captures the feedback of those who gave birth in 2025, including their experience of ante-natal care, labour and birth, and post-natal care.
Where patient experience is best
Patients reported highly positive experiences throughout their maternity care. They felt well-informed about where to give birth and had plenty of time during antenatal appointments to ask questions and discuss their pregnancy. Midwives were described as attentive, listening carefully and checking in on mental health needs, while appropriate support was provided when needed. Communication was consistently clear, and both midwives and doctors showed strong awareness of patients’ medical histories.
Patients also felt actively involved in decisions about their care, and this sense of partnership continued after they returned home. They expressed trust and confidence in their care team, noting that helpful advice and support were available outside of standard hours, particularly around feeding. When they needed guidance, they were able to contact their team easily and receive timely, reassuring responses.
Continuing to improve
There was one survey question where the Royal Devon scored much lower than the national average. Respondents felt we could be doing more to enable their partners and other support people involved in their care to stay with them as much as they wanted. Our teams are already working on ways to make positive changes in this area.
Caroyln Mills, Chief Nursing Officer, said “These results reflect the commitment, compassion and expertise of not only our amazing midwifery teams, but those involved at every point in the maternity care journey. We work hard to create a culture of respect, dignity and professionalism here at the Royal Devon. I’d like to thank our teams for their work, and our patients for trusting us with their care.”
