A project to create rugby-themed crochet pieces for an exhibition ahead of this year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is gathering pace.
Crafters from across Exeter and Devon are being invited to get creative and help celebrate the global sporting event coming to the city.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup starts on 22 August, with Sandy Park hosting seven games, including two quarter-finals. As a result, the city will welcome players and fans from nine countries, as Exeter is put on the international stage.
Crochet enthusiasts in Exeter and throughout Devon are being asked to make rugby-inspired pieces for a yarn exhibition at Exeter’s historic Guildhall and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM).
“We are on the hunt for crocheters and knitters to help us build a magnificent display of craftwork. Whether you're a seasoned crocheter, knitter, or just learning the ropes (or loops!), we’d love to hear from you,” said Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure Services & Healthy Living.
Organisers are looking for rugby-themed pieces, including red roses – to represent the name given to the England women’s rugby team, the Red Roses – and ‘granny squares’ to be made into a knitted scarf for RAMM’s Gerald the Giraffe.
The exhibition at the historic Guildhall and RAMM will take place on 4 August.
Response to the call-out has already been good, with groups and individuals getting creative. Caroline from Exeter College has even made a crochet doll of England scrum-half Claudia Macdonald.
However, organisers still want more participants and are encouraging anyone who has not yet taken part to get involved.
Anyone who can help create some of these items is asked to get in touch with Sophie Constant at sophie.constant@exeter.gov.uk for further information.
Participants will be supplied with the patterns but will need to provide their own hooks or needles.
Finished pieces can be dropped off at the following locations by Friday 25 July. Please check opening times:
- Wonford Sports Centre
- Exeter’s Historic Guildhall
- RAMM
For those who would like to crochet or knit with others, a drop-in yarn station will be available at RAMM during its opening hours. Visit rammuseum.org.uk/about for opening times.
Local businesses able to donate yarn for the project, and community groups in need of yarn, are also encouraged to get in touch.
