Donna Manson, Chief Executive of Devon County Council, visited Isca Academy in Exeter to meet students and staff. Guided by student leaders, she toured the school and spoke with Year 11 pupils about their studies and exam preparations.
The visit also included a meeting with the school’s Careers and Community Leas, Discussions focused on developing work experience opportunities with Devon County Council and how these could align with students’ career aspirations.
They explored the skills required for future employment and ways to ensure placements are both meaningful and accessible. The conversation also considered how a long-term partnership could be established, offering students regular engagement, mentoring opportunities, and clearer pathways into employment.
The visit builds on a recent trip to County Hall, where Isca student leaders met senior figures and gained first-hand insight into how local government operates.
This ongoing programme of engagement forms part of efforts to strengthen links between Isca Academy, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, and Devon County Council, supporting students in their transition from education into employment.
Mrs Vicki Joyce, Headteacher at Isca Academy, said:
"We were delighted to welcome Donna Manson to Isca Academy and to showcase the hard work and ambition of our students. We are excited by the potential to develop a strong partnership with Devon County Council, creating meaningful work experience opportunities that will help prepare our students for the world beyond school.”
Ayda, one of Isca's Head Students, said:
"It was great to welcome Donna Manson to Isca. It was wonderful to speak with her about school life, my experiences and the support we get here. I want to thank her for her warmth, openness and honesty in all our conversations - both in our visit to County Hall and her visit to us."
