Residents urged to help shape Exeter's air quality plans

Residents are being reminded that they still have time to share their views on plans to improve air quality in Exeter.

The Council is currently consulting on its draft Air Quality Action Plan (2026–2030) and Air Quality Strategy (2026–2030), which set out how it will build on recent improvements while tackling ongoing challenges such as traffic-related pollution and air quality hotspots.

The draft Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) focuses on reducing nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) concentrations within Exeter's Air Quality Management Area, covering the city's main arterial roads.

Alongside this, the draft Air Quality Strategy (AQS) provides a wider city-wide framework, bringing together policies and initiatives to protect and improve air quality across Exeter.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Deputy Leader and Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “Air quality is improving in Exeter, which is great news, but we know there is still much to be done.

“That's why we want to hear from residents on our draft Air Quality Action Plan and Air Quality Strategy, particularly on how we can address hotspots across the city. I would urge everyone to have their say and help shape the final versions of these plans.”

The plans were informed by a community survey carried out earlier this year. The Council is now inviting further feedback from residents, businesses and stakeholders to help shape the final versions.

Clean air is essential for a healthy and thriving city. While air quality in Exeter has improved significantly in recent years, there are still localised issues along busy roads and in certain neighbourhoods.

The consultation asks residents to consider:

  • Whether the proposed actions are clear, appropriate and effective
  • Whether there are any gaps or additional ideas that should be considered
  • What the priorities are for improving air quality in Exeter
  • The accessibility and usefulness of air quality information

People’s responses will be used to refine and improve the final Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan, confirm priorities and ensure actions are deliverable and effective, and support a transparent decision-making process.

The survey, which takes around 10 minutes to complete, is open for six weeks from Friday 3 July until Friday 14 August.
