Women and girls are being asked for their feedback on safety whilst moving around Exeter.
hose who live, work, study in and socialise in Exeter are being invited to take part in a short online survey.
Organisers are keen to get views and insights into how women and girls experience the city while using public transport, walking, wheeling and cycling.
Those taking part can share their experiences through an online map-based survey and pop-up events around the city. The survey asks women and girls to identify places in the city and share their experiences and perceptions of safety at each location.
Opinions are welcomed from a wide range of people, so that the findings can lead to meaningful, long-term changes to create a safer and more inclusive city.
The pilot study is being led by Devon County Council, in partnership with WSP and is supported by key local partners including Exeter City Council, InExeter (The Business Improvement District), Devon and Cornwall Police, the University of Exeter and Exeter College.
This project builds on existing work led by the InExeter to improve safety within the nighttime economy and supports ECC’s Safer Exeter objectives.
Cllr Lucy Findlay, Lead Councillor with responsibility for the City Centre, said: “The safety of women and girls is paramount, which is why I welcome this pilot study.
“As a regular walker and cyclist, I know that perceptions of safety matter. Poorly lit streets and intimidating public spaces can be a real deterrent, particularly after dark. That is also why we have prioritised inclusivity within our new City Centre Strategy, ensuring that everyone can feel confident, safe and welcome when travelling around Exeter.”
The survey is open until 28 December and the findings from the map and events will be analysed to understand what changes could be made to improve the everyday experiences of women and girls across Exeter.
