Match Report: Exmouth Town 2-5 Weymouth

Exmouth Town were beaten 5-2 by Southern League Division One South leaders Weymouth, in a battling display at the Search4Local Stadium.

Town took the lead through Josh Cann, and levelled the game at 2-2 via Callum Shipton, but the clinical Terras were too much for the hosts in the end.

It was a dream start for Exmouth, as a corner came out to the edge of the box to Cann, and his deflected effort floated into the back of the net.

Unfortunately for Town, Weymouth would get their own slice of luck just minutes later, with Mitch Beardmore having his shot also take a heavy deflection before going in.

The visitors were playing some lovely football, and they demonstrated that when Toby Holmes was teed up inside the box, with a Ross Edwards block prevented his effort from the goal.

They would continue to show why they are the favourites for promotion, with a brilliant move concluding in a Holmes lob finding Brooklyn Genesini, but his volley struck the outside of the post.

Exmouth managed to stay in the game, and would get a chance of their own from a set-piece, but Ethan Slater couldn’t direct Cann’s cross goalwards.

Matt Wonnacott was forced into action from range, as a powerful Tom Bearwish strike was met by a strong save.

The second half would start in a similar vein, with Town doing well to limit chances, but the hosts were punished on the break by the Terras, with Genesini firing the ball into the back of the net.

New signing Tom Chastey would have a great chance to equalise, after some superb work from Alex Cairo saw a cross find Slater, and his blocked effort rolled towards the midfielder, but it was an easy save for Gerard Benfield.

Wonnacott would make a superb save to prevent a third, having initially saved a long-range effort, the ball was crossed back into the box, with the goalkeeper stopping a diving header at point-blank range.

This proved crucial, as Town would level the scoring after a Cann throw-in was headed on by Ace High, finding the run of Shipton, who calmly placed the ball into the bottom left corner.

Weymouth would bounce back quickly, and find themselves ahead once again, as the ball was played out to Lewis Brown, and his fierce finish gave Wonnacott no chance.

Town’s woeful injury luck continued, with both Ross Edwards and Louis Morison both forced off in the latter stages.

It would then get worse for the hosts, as Bearwish skilfully got around the defence, before being brought down in the box by Cann.

Genesini would step up and confidently dispatch his penalty straight down the middle, to put the game out of sight.

A former Town man would compound Exmouth’s misery, as Tor Swann burst through on goal before thumping the ball into the roof of the net.

It was a spirited display from Exmouth, but the league leaders showed exactly why they are in that position, running out clear winners in the end.

Town will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday, as they travel to Meadow Lane to take on Westbury United.
