As the mornings and evenings grow darker, Torbay Council are reminding all road users to be aware of the new 20mph school zones now in effect.
These zones are designed to improve safety for everyone especially the many children who use these routes daily.
Introduced around six schools following community support in last year’s consultation, the zones target areas with high levels of pedestrian and vehicle interaction.
Lower speeds in urban areas help reduce accidents, cut noise, and improve air quality.
They also give drivers better visibility and more time to react.
The 20mph zones are clearly marked, legally enforced at all times, and may be monitored by police.
New signage, improved road markings, and enhanced crossing points have been installed to support the changes.
The schools where new mandatory 20mph zones have been put in place this year are:
Paignton
• Sacred Heart School (Cecil Road area)
• Hayes School (Totnes Road/Hayes Road area)
Torquay
• Torquay Academy (Barton Road/Cricketfield Road)
• St Cuthbert Mayne School (Teignmouth Road/West Hill)
• Barton Hill Academy (Barton Hill Road)
• Cockington School (Avenue Road/Mill Lane/Old Mill Road)
At Torquay Academy and St Cuthbert Mayne School, new pedestrian crossings have also been installed.
The school schemes form part of Torbay Council’s Road Safety Initiatives Programme, which continues to roll out 20mph limits in carefully selected locations.
