New app supports people to prepare and recover from hip and knee surgery in Torbay

A new patient app and monitoring system has been launched in Torbay and South Devon to help people who are having a total hip or knee replacement to prepare for and recover from their surgery.

The patient-facing myrecovery app contains interactive exercise videos, articles, informative videos, and checklists to help people before and after their surgery, while questionnaires and insights will help the clinical team involved with their care to monitor and track their progress through a real-time dashboard. All information is personalised to each patient, and they can also use the app to report any concerns or to ask questions to their care team.

Patients will also be encouraged to complete daily pain scores and exercises which both they and their clinician can use to track their progress and ensure they’re getting the support they need.

Dr Claire Blandford, a Consultant Anaesthetist at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust who has helped to configure the app’s content, said: “We understand that preparing for any surgery can be daunting and the myrecovery app provides people with the support they need both before and after an operation at a time that suits them. All the information has been tailored to Torbay and South Devon, making it a bespoke app, designed for patients by the clinical teams looking after them.

“We are always working hard to support our patients and to involve them in their care to manage their conditions, in a way they want. We’re thrilled that 110 people have already signed up to the app since it was launched on 28 July, which underlines our commitment to provide more person-centred care and information in accessible, smarter digital formats, in-line with the move from analogue to digital, as outlined in the 10 Year Health Plan.”

Rosie Fowler, Customer Success Manager from Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company (HOPCo), the creator of the myrecovery platform said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust to implement the myrecovery platform.

“This collaboration allows us to continue growing our footprint within the NHS, while supporting trusts with innovative digital tools that directly improve patient experience and outcomes. Seeing the early impact on both patient engagement and recovery journeys is incredibly rewarding, and it’s exciting to know our work is fully aligned with the NHS’s long-term strategy for smarter, more accessible care.”

Early patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with people highlighting how reassuring it is to have clear, accessible information at every stage of their journey.

Philip Cowdery, from Brixham, has been using app to help him prepare for his recent full knee replacement surgery. He said: “I was encouraged to use the app and I found it helpful before and after my surgery, including the videos and follow-up questions about my progress.

“I am very impressed and feel this app will allow my medical team to chart my progress, and I fully recommend people to use it.”
