Counter Terrorism Police have confirmed that the killing of Ann Widdecombe is being treated as a targeted attack as detectives continue to investigate the motive.
Speaking at New Scotland Yard on Tuesday afternoon, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, provided an update on the ongoing murder investigation.
Mr Taylor said he was unable to discuss many details because of the live investigation but stressed that investigators believe the attack was deliberate and targeted.
He said officers are continuing to examine the planning and preparation behind the incident, as well as the motivation for the attack.
Police have also secured a warrant for further detention, allowing the suspect to be held for up to seven days under the Terrorism Act while inquiries continue.
