Eight local community groups have been awarded a share of £15,650 in the Home for Ukraine Scheme grants.
This comes after Exeter City Council opened a dedicated Ukraine element within the City Grants programme to support local community activity that benefits Ukrainian residents, families and communities in Exeter. This is funded through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
The funding will help voluntary, community and not-for-profit organisations provide activities, services and support for Ukrainian people living in the city.
One-off grants of up to £2,500 are available for each successful applicant, taken from an overall budget of £60,000.
Those awarded funding include:
- ASSOCIATION “MOVEUP” CIC - £2,500 helping to empower 40 young Ukrainian refugees (aged 16-25) in Exeter, specifically college/university students.
- Devon Ukrainian Association CIC - £850 towards a week of community, cultural and commemorative activities to mark 35 years of Ukrainian independence.
- Exeter Art House - £2,400 for a pop-up exhibition and community culture days, a two-day pop-up event in Autumn 2026.
- Four of Swords - £2,100 towards a 10-week Ukrainian youth theatre pilot, creating an original performance by Ukrainian teenagers living in Exeter.
- Mavka Heritage Club - £1,900 for an intergenerational and intercultural arts project bringing together Ukrainian teenagers and their families in the local area.
- School of Ukrainian Studies “Berehynia”- £2,500 generating eight weekly Saturday learning sessions for around 30 Ukrainian children in Exeter.
- St Sidwell’s Centre Exeter - £2,000 supporting Ukrainian learners into inclusion and employment through English Language Provision.
- Ukrainian Business Club CIC - £1,400 for a progression project teaching Ukrainian people in Exeter how to further their career, launch their own business, build relationships, and help to give back to the place that took them in.
Cllr Liz Pole, Lead Councillor with responsibilities for Communities, said: “It’s important that we continue to support Ukrainian residents and families in our city as they build their lives and become more involved in our communities.
“I’m really pleased that this dedicated national funding is helping local organisations provide such a wide range of opportunities – from English language and education to youth theatre, cultural activities, employment and business support.
“These grants are about much more than funding individual projects. They are helping people connect with one another, maintain and celebrate their heritage, develop new skills and opportunities, and build strong links with the wider Exeter community. I’m delighted that the council is able to play a part in supporting this important work.”
This was the first of three rounds of funding for Exeter City Grants in 2026-2027, with a total of £60,000 available for community projects this year.
The second round of funding will open for applications on Monday 14 September and close on Tuesday 13 October.
