Exeter’s councillors have received a total of nearly £442,000 between them for their work in the past year.
Only £1,000 of the total is in expenses claimed by members of the council while the bulk of the payments are fixed allowances set by an independent outside body without any input from the city council.
The aim of the allowances is to permit working people to serve on their local authorities without suffering financially as a result.
The full list of figures was published ahead of a meeting of the executive committee, and leader Phil Bialyk (Lab, Exwick) said it was important for local authority members to be fully transparent about the money they received.
The amounts vary from a dozen city councillors on the basic member’s allowance of £7,070 up until the end of March 2026 to Cllr Bialyk, whose allowance as leader is £30,049.
Councillors receive extra allowances over the basic rate for such roles as committee chairs, portfolio holders, group leaders and the Mayoralty.
The full list, including allowances and expense claims up until the end of March this year, is as follows. A number of councillors stood down or were not re-elected at the polls earlier this year.
