Concerns have been raised over the planned closure of Exmouth Post Office, with fears that customers could lose a central location for accessing essential postal and banking services.
The branch, located inside TG Jones at 19 Chapel Street, is due to close on Monday, September 28, as part of a restructuring programme announced by the retailer that will see some of its stores close.
Post Office Limited said it is working to find a way for post office services to continue in Exmouth and is in the early stages of reviewing applications from potential operators.
The organisation said any replacement service would need to be sustainable for both the new operator and Post Office Limited.
Exmouth town councillor Joe Whibley said the potential loss of the businesses, particularly the post office, would be "devastating" for the town.
Cllr Whibley urged residents to take part in the consultation process and make their views known to the Post Office.
As part of its proposals, Post Office Limited has identified Littleham Cross Post Office at 18 Littleham Road as an alternative branch. It is approximately 1.3 miles from the Chapel Street branch.
A range of services would be available at Littleham Cross, although Passport Check & Send, a comprehensive travel money service and vehicle tax would not be offered.
Writing on Facebook local MP David Reed said " I have written to the Post Office asking them to set out their plans for Exmouth, including what alternative sites are being considered and what they are doing to ensure Post Office services remain available in the town.
I also want to hear directly from local people about the services you rely on and what you think Exmouth needs next"
He has also launched a short survey to understand what services people use and what solution they want to see for Exmouth.
