Exmouth's mayor has opted to cancel a forthcoming charity garden party due to a host of issues that hit its plans.
Councillor Graham Deasy, who is the mayor for Exmouth, said it had been a hard decision to cancel the Mayor’s Charity Garden Party planned for Sunday 10 May at the town’s Imperial Hotel.
But he said a prospective surgical operation close to the date, as well as other issues that the town council has had to deal with, meant he felt it was sensible to put the event off for now.
Asked if it would be rearranged, Cllr Deasy said he hoped that it would be, but that he faces re-election for mayor in May. If he succeeds, then he would look to re-arrange, but if not, then the new mayor might organise something different.
“I’m waiting for an operation and I have been offered a potential date on 6 May, which would have been very close to the event,” he said.
“Also, there has been a lot going on with the town council, with the town hall recently coming under our jurisdiction. That’s made our staff extremely busy, and what with me being away on leave recently and the school holidays meaning other staff were off, it felt like we needed to make a decision about what to do.
“I like things done properly and it didn’t quite feel like we had our ducks in a row. While we have done a lot of work on it, there comes a point when you have to call it.”
Cllr Deasy said his term as mayor ends on 18 May, and that he is planning on standing again for the role.
“If I get back in, then I can resurrect the idea of the garden party fundraiser for later in the summer, so watch this space,” he added.
In a Facebook post, the town council said all those who had purchased tickets would be given a full refund via Ticket Tailor.
“Refunds are being processed and should appear in your account within the next few days,” it said.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
