Residents are being asked to share their views on plans to improve air quality in Exeter.
The Council is consulting on its draft Air Quality Action Plan (2026–2030) and draft Air Quality Strategy (2026–2030).
The documents set out how Exeter City Council will continue to protect and improve air quality across Exeter, building on recent progress and addressing key local challenges such as traffic-related pollution and exposure in hotspot areas.
The Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) specifically aims to improve concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) within the Exeter Air Quality Management Area, which encompasses key arterial roads.
The Air Quality Strategy (AQS) is a broader strategic plan that brings together relevant policies and plans into a city-wide strategy to improve air quality.
Cllr Ruth Williams, Deputy Leader and Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “Air quality is improving in Exeter, which is great news, but we know there is still much to be done.
“That's why we want to hear from residents on our draft Air Quality Action Plan and Air Quality Strategy, particularly on how we can address hotspots across the city. I would urge everyone to have their say and help shape the final versions of these plans.”
The plans were informed by a community survey carried out earlier this year. The Council is now inviting further feedback from residents, businesses and stakeholders to help shape the final versions.
Clean air is essential for a healthy and thriving city. While air quality in Exeter has improved significantly in recent years, there are still localised issues along busy roads and in certain neighbourhoods.
The consultation asks residents to consider:
- Whether the proposed actions are clear, appropriate and effective
- Whether there are any gaps or additional ideas that should be considered
- What the priorities are for improving air quality in Exeter
- The accessibility and usefulness of air quality information
Feedback will help ensure the plans reflect local priorities, experiences and practical realities.
The survey, which takes around 10 minutes to complete, will be open for six weeks from Friday 3 July until Friday 14 August.
