The first 400 people who attend a new community festival in Exeter will receive a free ice-cream, it has been revealed.
The first Whipton and Heavitree Festival takes place at Hamlin Lane Playing Fields on Saturday 29 August and will include music, escape room boxes, art demonstrations, skateboarding, sports activities and much more. It will run from 12 noon until 4pm.
The festival will celebrate the area that now falls under the Pride in Place banner, a £20 million government-funded initiative, where money will be spent over the next ten years to support projects, activities and opportunities that improve lives across the area.
Andy Mulcock, Chair of the Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board, said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together from across the area to celebrate all that makes our locality so special.
“Strengthening community is at the heart of Pride in Place, and events like this are so important in giving local people a voice and celebrating our places.
“Speaking as the chair of the new Pride in Place Board, it is an immediate priority that we extend our understanding of our Whipton and Heavitree neighbourhoods and begin exploring more positive future opportunities together so this exciting and creative community celebration is most welcome as our work gets underway.”
The Pride in Place funding was secured following work by Exeter MP Steve Race and will provide long-term investment to support improvements across the neighbourhood.
Steve said: “The very first Whipton & Heavitree Festival is a core part of kick-starting Exeter’s £20m Pride in Place project.
"I'm delighted that organisations and people from across the city are involved in a delivering a brilliant day of activities for young people, from escape room experiences with Prodigy Escapes to street art with Steve McCracken.
"I hope this year’s festival will be the first of a new annual event that brings neighbours together and uses arts, sport and culture to build our community spirit and showcase the brilliant things happening here."
More information on the festival will be available in the run-up to the Bank Holiday weekend.
