An award-winning Devon cheerleading team can celebrate in style after being given the go-ahead to move to a new home.
The Exeter Starlites have been given permission to use an old warehouse on the Marsh Barton industrial estate as a training venue.
Exeter City Council’s planning officers have said yes to the change of use from a warehouse at Grace Road.
The Starlites have athletes competing in European competitions as well as encouraging beginners to try the demanding sport. An official opening event will be held at the new headquarters on Saturday July 11 from 11am to 3pm.
The club was established in 2008 by a handful of enthusiastic members, and has been running training sessions in Exeter and Cranbrook.
On its website the club says: “Over the years we have built a strong and supportive community that thrives on energy, teamwork, and passion.”
As a sport, cheerleading combines cheers, chants, stunts, jumps, arm motions, tumbling, and dance into exciting and polished routines.
Cheerleaders compete in the World Games, but the sport has not yet made it into the Olympics.
Exeter Starlites say it also helps young people build confidence, improve self-esteem, stay active, and develop lasting friendships.
