The latest figures show positive signs for East Devon’s economy, with competitive wages and low unemployment rates.
For the first time since current records began, the median wage for an East Devon worker in 2024 (£30,606) was notably higher than the South West average (£29,539). This reflects the progress being made encouraging and attracting new employment opportunities, improving residents’ access to rewarding careers.
Cranbrook ranked top for net household income of all areas of Devon in 2023 (£52,074) - one of the highest in the South West behind Bristol and Bath. East Devon District Council (EDDC) is delighted that this new community is performing well and is keen to encourage this growth across all corners of the district.
East Devon’s unemployment rate stood at just 2.4% in 2025, consistently below the regional (3.2%) and national (4.5%) average at that time. Even though unemployment in East Devon has remained stable, a record number of people out of work also said that they want a job.
Supporting the creation of new jobs and higher wages are amongst the aims of EDDC’s Economic Development Strategy (2024-2029). The council is providing support to help existing businesses expand, and building strong foundations for new start-ups, such as through the recently-launched StartSmart programme.
Helping town centres to flourish is another priority for EDDC. Following successful events in Axminster, Exmouth, and Honiton, a new Gate to Plate event will be coming to Cranbrook later this year. Local food, drinks, and crafts are showcased at these markets, drawing in visitors to town centres.
The progress of the strategy, the plans for the year ahead, and the figures from the Local Economic Review were reviewed by councillors at EDDC’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 6 May 2026.
