Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a warning regarding fuel storage. With fuel and heating oil prices remaining high, farmers are being encouraged to review the security of fuel storage on their farms and rural businesses.
At present, we have not seen any significant increase in reports of fuel or heating oil theft within Devon and Cornwall, however, rising fuel costs can make these products an attractive target for criminals and it is important for farmers to take simple steps now to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of fuel theft.
Fuel theft can have a significant impact on a farming business- as well as the immediate cost of replacing stolen fuel, there can be disruption to daily operations, damage to tanks and storage areas, and additional costs associated with cleaning up any spills.
Devon and Cornwall Police Rural Affairs Team are encouraging farmers to regularly check fuel and oil tanks, particularly those located away from farmyards or public view. Consider installing good quality locks, security lighting, CCTV, or alarm systems where practical. Marking tanks and recording fuel levels can also help identify any unusual losses at an early stage.
If possible, keep fuel storage areas well secured and limit access to trusted staff. It is also worth considering whether fuel tanks are visible from nearby roads or public rights of way and taking steps to improve natural screening where appropriate.
Rural communities often play an important role in preventing crime- If you notice suspicious vehicles, people showing unusual interest in fuel storage and farms, or activity that seems out of place, please report it on 999 if it is ongoing or 101 to pass non-emergency information. Early information can help prevent offences and protect neighbouring farms and businesses.
While there is currently no specific concern regarding an increase in fuel thefts, taking preventative measures now can help ensure farms remain resilient and reduce opportunities for criminals in the future. Staying vigilant and maintaining good security practices remains the best defence against rural crime.
