Work begins this week on the second phase of the Newtown Active Travel Scheme in Exeter, making it easier, safer and more attractive for people to walk, wheel and cycle around the area.
This next stage of the scheme will further improve active travel connections, creating a more accessible and sustainable neighbourhood while supporting Exeter’s wider ambitions to encourage safe, healthy and sustainable methods of travel.
Phase one of the scheme was delivered earlier this year. This next phase will see improvements made to the Clifton Street / Clifton Hill junction and the Clifton Road / Belmont Road junction. Most of the work will take place at the junction of Clifton Road, Chute Street and Clifton Street.
Road markings will also be improved where Clifton Road meets Albert Street, Lower Albert Street and Portland Street. Temporary, multi-way traffic lights will be installed to ensure the safety of pedestrians whilst the work is taking place.
Exeter City Council’s Lead Councillor with responsibility for Healthy Living, Cllr Duncan Wood, said that these works will make a difference to people living and travelling through the Newtown area.
“Labour is committed to making it easier for residents to travel around the city without having to rely on their cars, while making our roads safer for all road users. Led by our Live and Move team at Exeter City Council, this project has been shaped by five years of close working with the local community in Newtown, and it’s hugely exciting to see the next phase take shape.
“Making it easier for people to travel actively and safely around Exeter is vital in ensuring that Exeter residents can lead healthy and active lives.”
This stage of works should see a completion date of early December. Residents are advised that some temporary disruption will occur overnight on Friday 30 October to allow essential construction work to take place, requiring a temporary road closure.
Newtown residents have been kept informed of progress of the project to date via a series of letters and regular updates are provided via a dedicated web page: Newtown - Live and Move
