Police are appealing for witnesses following a series of thefts targeting electric vehicle charging points at locations across East Devon.
The incidents took place overnight on Tuesday 16 June 2026 and involved the theft of charging cables from public electric vehicle charging stations in four separate locations. Officers believe the offences may be linked and are appealing to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to come forward.
The affected locations are:
- Premier Inn, Harbour Road, Seaton
- Dolphin Street Car Park, Colyton
- West Street Car Park, Axminster
- Town Centre Car Park, Beer
The theft of charging cables can cause significant disruption for electric vehicle owners, leaving charging points out of service and potentially resulting in costly repairs and replacement work. Charging cables often contain valuable metals, making them a target for thieves.
Devon & Cornwall Police are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and are keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the affected locations during the evening of Tuesday 16 June or the early hours of Wednesday 17 June.
Investigators are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious vehicles, unusual activity around the charging points, or individuals acting suspiciously in the car parks. Officers are also urging local residents, businesses and motorists to review any CCTV, doorbell camera or dashcam footage that may have captured relevant information.
The thefts come as the number of electric vehicles on Devon's roads continues to grow, increasing reliance on public charging infrastructure across the region. Damage and theft at charging stations can affect both local residents and visitors who depend on the facilities while travelling.
Police are reminding members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour around public infrastructure and vehicle charging facilities as soon as possible.
Anyone with information relating to the incidents is asked to contact Devon & Cornwall Police via the force website or by calling 101, quoting crime reference number 50260155271.
Information can also be passed anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via its website.
