People living in Exeter are more active than anyone else in the country….and that’s official!
Latest figures from Sport England reveal that Exeter is the most active authority in England.
According to data in the latest National Active Lives survey – taken between November 2024 and November 2025 – 77% of the city’s adult population are now physically active, taking part in regular sporting or leisure activity.
That’s great news for Exeter, where there’s been a real push over recent years to get more people more active in their everyday lives.
The council has worked in partnership with Sport England since 2018 to deliver the Place Partnership programme. The Council’s Sport England supported Live and Move team works with partners across the city to deliver a range of opportunities in Exeter for the least active people to be more active.
Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor with responsibility for leisure Services and Healthy Living, said: “This is great news for Exeter. We’ve worked hard over recent years to encourage more activity across the city, so these results are heartening.
“However, in celebrating this news, we know there is still more to do and that stubborn inequalities still exist here. In Exeter we carry out our own Local Active Lives survey and this has highlighted the wide gaps across the city that still exist.
“We are currently putting the finishing touches to a new local active lives survey, which will be carried out throughout the city in the coming weeks. Watch this space!”
