Police have launched an investigation after a banner promoting Exmouth Pride was torn down, marking the third consecutive year that event signage has been targeted
The banner, which had been installed by volunteers on Thursday, June 4, was removed within 24 hours. Organisers said the incident follows similar acts in previous years, including banners being slashed with a knife in 2025 and stolen in 2024.
Exmouth Pride expressed disappointment at the latest incident, saying it highlighted the continuing importance of the event.
In a statement, the committee said: “One of our Pride banners was removed less than 24 hours after being installed by volunteers. It’s disappointing, but it also serves as a reminder that Pride is about more than celebration – it’s about visibility, inclusion, and ensuring everyone feels welcome, represented and safe.”
Exmouth Police also voiced frustration over the repeated vandalism, describing the behaviour as “pathetic”.
Posting on social media, officers said: “Two days ago, all the banners and signs went up advertising the event and within a day we are already seeing the same activity we have had for the last couple of years, with banners going missing. Seriously, what is wrong with people?”
Police said they do not believe the incident was simple mischief, suggesting it appeared to be a deliberate attempt to target the Pride event.
“This is targeted protest at the Exmouth event, which is really sad,” the statement continued. “We would appeal for any information in relation to persons conducting hate activity.”
The Exmouth Neighbourhood Policing Team confirmed it will have a presence at the event and reiterated its support for ensuring all members of the community feel safe and welcome.
Exmouth Pride is scheduled to take place on June 20, 2026, and will feature the event’s first-ever Pride march along the town’s seafront, followed by celebrations in Manor Gardens.
